The Booker Tea Reading Group was born in Washington, DC, and for more than twenty years the city had its own chapter.

When founder Tammi L. Coles moved to Berlin in 2006, Kathy Sawyer took the lead in Washington. Kathy had joined in 1997, shortly after the group began, and she kept the chapter going for twelve more years. Under her care the group moved to Meetup, welcomed a steady stream of new readers, and settled into a monthly meeting place in the Atrium of the National Portrait Gallery downtown.

In early 2018, Kathy left Washington for a new home in Bloomington. Fellow member Colleen Thomas stepped in as coordinator for a few months, and the chapter closed later that year when no new organizer came forward.

We are grateful to Kathy for her many years of leadership, and to every DC reader who shared a Sunday and a book with us. The Booker Tea continues in Berlin, in English and German.
